Off The Bottle

I’m still jetlag and tired, but I’m also suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms due to not posting in my blog. So here I am.

Before I start writing about our trip to Toronto and LA I need to write about something that happened just before we left. An end of an era.  Well, when you have a toddler almost every week is an end of an era as they change all the time at that age. But this change was a big one.

About a week before we left Blake wasn’t very well. He had constant diarrhoea, on and off temperature and was just tired and miserable in general. Getting him on antibiotics for a mild ear infection made things even worse. Oh, how I longed to see solid poop nested comfortably in his dirty diaper like tiny Easter chocolate eggs and not the yellow-brownish chunky soup that leaked all over the place like some 50's monster movie slime creature eager to consume and cover the entire planet. Hey, check out these incredible poop metaphors. Papa is on a roll!

As part of his illness Blake lost interest in food (and a tiny bit of weight), especially his beloved bottles. At that stage, 22 months, Blake had a bottle three times a day for every meal in addition to “normal” food. Now he’d smack the bottle away or toss it aside. Our family doctor advised that milk based products aren’t a good idea until his diarrhoea cleared up anyway, so it wasn’t a big deal. Blake got better a couple of days after we arrived to Canada. It was then that I realized that even healthy he still had no interest in his bottles.

For me that was a whoa moment.

Ever since Blake was born I made his bottles every single day. I must have. He had bottles every day and I was the only one who made them, so I must’ve done it every single day for almost two years. And now that morning ritual is over for good (at least with Blake).

I actually planned a long time ago how I would get Blake off his bottles. Maybe remove the lunch bottle first, then the breakfast one. The question was when. I aimed to get him bottle-free by his second birthday, but a friend of mine convinced me that there’s nothing wrong in letting him enjoy his bottles until his third birthday if he enjoys them. They are very nutritious and he gets liquids in, so what’s the harm?

And suddenly it’s not an issue any more. We must make sure he’s eating and drinking enough now that the bottles are off the menu, but it makes life so much easier! I gain back the fifteen minutes it take to make the daily bottles (that’s about 90 hours a year, at a quick calculation) and we don’t need to lug around with us chilled bottles and a bottle warmer. It’s great, really.

So why does it make me feel a little sad?

Home At Last

We arrived home at around two. Our poor Great Danes, Leo and Dexter, were in complete shock. I expected them to jump like crazy and instead they walked to me calmly with a subdued tail wag. Poor little poochies.

Blake slept only three and a half hours on the plane, but got excited when he got to rediscover all his old toys after three weeks away, which is quite a chunk of life for him. Eventually I got him to fall asleep in our bed and we all napped until the evening.

Lots to write about the trip, but I'll need to recover a tiny bit. I'm in zombie state at the moment.

Good to be home, though.

Damn You Iceland!

Like many others, I'm grounded and can't fly back to the UK due to the volcanic ashes from Iceland. I guess this is where I enter a joke about Iceland the supermarket chain, but I couldn't be bothered. I want home to my puppies! I'm going to miss at least one, probably two, weeks of paid work and we have our dog/home sitter waiting for us too.

It's all very nice to have more time in sunny LA, but the additional costs of staying are not that appealing. We will probably move to stay with family in a couple of days.

So it looks like April is going to be a very slim month for my blog as I just can't find the time or mood to sit down and write properly. I should've been home by now!

The only answer is to drink a big glass of water and go back to play some games on my PSP and DS while Daddy and Blake are napping in the other room.

Happy Travels

We've been travelling for a while now. We were in Toronto and now we're in LA. Quite a few things have happened, but I don't have the time to sit down and write it all properly, though I'm taking notes and writing drafts. Hopefully when we get back on Monday I'll be able to start posting again. I feel sort of bad not writing at all after writing so much last month.

OK, gotta go back to holidaying! Disneyland tomorrow.

April Musings

Good. The first of the month is over so I can actually post without having to feel the need to sneak in a stupid April Fools' gag.

I'm writing this mid-packing. We're off to Toronto and LA for Easter break. Blake will get to spend time with his bio-mom and his seven months younger half brother. I look forward to meet so many good friends in both cities.

One of the highlights will be taking Blake to Disneyland for the first time. As a kid I wanted to go there so badly and was so jealous of kids who did get there. I finally made it when I was twenty and as I was sitting in the It's a Small World ride I thought it was cute, but I was about fifteen years too late. Being there with Blake and seeing that place through his eyes is going to be the closest I'm ever going to get to experiencing it "properly".

I just hope Blake is going to keep getting better. He started going to nursery six weeks ago and with that, as expected and just like everybody warned us, came the illnesses. Nurseries are like big Petri dishes full of yucky germs. The cutest Petri dishes one can imagine, but still.

First it was a persistent cough. Then the occasional high temperature. Suddenly all the bottled medicine in our cabinet started seeing regular use. Then this week he started losing interest in food, especially his bottles which he usually loves. Then came the endless explosive diarrhoea that led to many leaky incidents. At least he kept wanting water. We've been to the doctor, but there's not much that can be done. The diarrhoea is still not completely gone. I hoped it would be behind him by now (Ha ha, get it? Behind him? I should get my own sitcom), but at least it's getting better in the way that it's less messy and he's eating better and acting more like his old self.

Back to packing!
